What should be tested?

All electrical items that are designed to be connected to mains power or a generator power supply that are not part of the fixed building wiring comes within the remit of PAT testing. This includes items that are not usually considered to be ‘Portable’ such as hand dryers, heated towel rails or built in dish washers, boilers and cookers. The testing frequency of these fixed items can often be longer than more portable items such as a vacuum cleaner or a hand held drill.

Even items connected to 3 Phase supplies (400V) require periodic PAT Testing and these would never be considered Portable appliances. If you require testing on these items please call to discuss as these are not included in our standard rates.

Battery powered items such as cordless drills only require a visual check but the battery charger used with them will require a full PAT test.

All IT equipment should be tested along with any power cords that are used to power them. These power cords are treated as separate items as different standards apply to them.

Electric cable extension leads must also be tested and these are often the most commonly failed items.
